Feasibility Study: Addition of 11,000 tpa furfural & 3.8 MW electricity

Project SUMMARY

DATE: 4Q12 - 1Q13

DESCRIPTION/FEATURES: The pentosan content of straw (trash/leaves) is similar to bagasse. However, the lower moisture content of the straw is advantageous for the furfural production. The feasibility was based on a mixed bagasse/straw feed to a bolt-on furfural production facility.

OUTCOME: Before tax IRR= 39.1%, with a payback period of less than 3 years.

Background

A 815 tch mill will have excess fibre as a result of increased green cane harvesting. Traditional beneficiation of the fibre would be via co-generation of electricity.
